No matter what other business books tell you, there is no single way to achieve business success. You can approach your business from different angles and still be successful. Unfortunately, you have to find your own way. No one can teach you how to be successful in your own business. You must be responsible for your own decisions.
THERE IS NO ROAD MAP
Since there is no one way to business success, you must learn to listen to everything that is offered to you. Read all about business success and failure and integrate everything you learn to create a road map of your own.
It is fine to allow others to guide you but remember that final decisions must be your own. Let your experiences show you the way.
CONTROL FREAKS NEED NOT APPLY
Sometimes, people wish to start their own businesses because they want to feel in control. In the real world, however, an entrepreneur is almost never in control. A businessman’s day is filled with customer, vendor and employee demands.
You must accept that some business outcomes are just out of your control. Take a look at the information you have now and make a decision. Don’t worry about making the wrong decision. If things go wrong, learn from the outcome and make another decision.
UNIVERSAL TRUTH # 1: LUCK
The perfect formula for success is luck and timing. Although it is sometimes hard to accept that some things happen beyond our control, it is more often better to be lucky than good. This does not mean, however, that you should sit back and let luck run its course. Continue to work hard and celebrate victories. And when luck knocks on your door, just be ready for it.
UNIVERSAL TRUTH # 2: TIMING
Timing isn’t everything, it’s the only thing. This old cliché is applicable to running any business. Fate sometimes gives you windfalls along the way just for being at the right place and at the right time. When that happens, embrace and accept the unexpected.
IT’S HOW YOU HANDLE FAILURE
It is more important for you to learn how to handle failure than to handle success. In business, you will ultimately experience more failure than the latter. It is how you handle yourself during dark times that matter.
You must not blame yourself or others when failure strikes. Learn what you can about the failure, wallow in it for a couple of weeks, and then move on. Remember that failure is a great teacher. It will teach you humility – a skill that you must learn to become a successful entrepreneur.
Humility allows you to appreciate your successes and accept your shortcomings. Furthermore, humility allows you to value the contribution of others around you. When you learn the lesson of humility, you have less to lose.
LEARN WHEN TO GIVE UP
Believe it or not, it is perfectly ok to give up on your business and quit. Most businesses don’t succeed. Sometimes it is better to quit, cut your losses and just start over.
If you notice that you and your business are falling deeper into debt on a monthly basis, it might be better to shut it down. If you have lost your passion for the business or if you dislike the people you are with, cut your losses. Remember, with closure comes a new start.
